External control of dissipation in a nanometer-scale radiofrequency mechanical resonator

چکیده
We demonstrate a technique by which the quality factor of a magnetically-actuated mechanical resonator is controlled by an external electrical circuit. Modulation of this parameter is achieved by local variation of the electrical impedance presented to the resonator at its resonance frequency. We describe a theory that explains this result as arising from eddy currents in the external electrical circuit, which are driven by electromotive forces generated through motion of the resonator in the applied magnetic field. The theory is in good agreement with the induced variation in quality factor that we observe. q 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Phonon-mediated dissipation in micro- and nano-mechanical systems
We study phonon-mediated dissipation mechanisms in small-scale mechanical systems in light of recent efforts to design high-Q micrometerand nanometer-scale electro-mechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS). We consider dissipation mechanisms which redistribute the energy within a resonator, such as thermoelastic damping, the Akhiezer effect, and the Landau–Rumer effect, as well as the radiation of ene...
متن کاملThermo-elastic Damping in a Capacitive Micro-beam Resonator Considering Hyperbolic Heat Conduction Model and Modified Couple Stress Theory
In this paper, the quality factor of thermo-elastic damping in an electro-statically deflected micro-beam resonator has been investigated. The thermo-elastic coupled equations for the deflected micro-beam have been derived using variational and Hamilton principles based on modified couple stress theory and hyperbolic heat conduction model. The thermo-elastic damping has been obtained discretizi...
متن کاملFabrication of high frequency nanometer scale mechanical resonators from bulk Si crystals
We report on a method to fabricate nanometer scale mechanical structures from bulk, single-crystal Si substrates. A technique developed previously required more complex fabrication methods and an undercut step using wet chemical processing. Our method does not require low pressure chemical vapor deposition of intermediate masking layers, and the final step in the processing uses a dry etch tech...

In this thesis, measurements on superconducting electrical circuits that exhibit quantum mechanical effects are presented. Nonlinear superconducting circuits can be regarded as artificial atoms with energy spectra that can be engineered. The artificial atoms can be used as quantum bits for quantum computation. By coupling the artificial atoms to the electromagnetic field inside a transmission l...
متن کاملHighly efficient spatiotemporal coherent control in nanoplasmonics on a nanometer-femtosecond scale by time reversal
One of the main problems in nanoplasmonics is the active dynamic control of optical local fields. We propose an efficient method to solve this problem. It allows one to impose coherent control of the spatiotemporal localization of the optical excitation energy in nanoplasmonic systems on the nanometer spatial and femtosecond temporal scales. This approach is based on a general idea of time reve...
